If your usual choice of getaway includes stunning scenery, quaint towns and seaside charm, then the little town of Schull should definitely be next on your list. For anyone who has never visited this part of Ireland before, Schull is located in the far South-West of County Cork and is around 60 miles from Cork City.
One of the first things you’ll notice about Schull is its laidback and easygoing character. Pop into one of the pubs on an afternoon and you’re sure to bump into a few locals enjoying a cup of coffee and a sandwich. If you venture into Schull on a sunny day, the town is bustling with people spilling out from the pubs and shops and you’re likely to find some live music on an evening.
One of the most appealing things about Schull is that it caters for almost all types of holiday makers. Those who like a relaxing getaway can take a walk along the foreshore, pick up some local produce at the country market (held every Sunday) or take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands such as Cape Clear or Heir Island.
For those who prefer a little more adventure, Schull Watersports Centre can arrange diving, kayaking and sailing activities. Mizen Head isn’t far away, and if you have a head for heights then you can walk across the famous arched bridge and explore the visitor centre in the Irish Lights Signal Station.
If you want to brave the beach then head to Barleycove, a large sandy beach with sand dunes which were created by a tidal wave over 200 years ago. Afterwards pop over to the picturesque Crookhaven Harbour and enjoy a meal at O’Sullivan’s Bar – you can even get a basket of fresh shrimps when they’re in season.
If you want to venture further afield or take a day trip then the towns of Bantry, Skibbereen and Ballydehob are worth a look. Cork City is also only 2 and a half hours away by bus, departing from the Old Bank House in Schull.
Schull is a pretty town which has a lot to offer. If you decide to visit this part of the world you’ll definitely receive a warm welcome and some friendly faces.
