The Little Museum of Dublin tells the story of Ireland’s capital city in the 20th Century. The Lord Mayor of Dublin opened this new and charming non-profit museum in October of 2011. The museum chronicles social, political, and cultural history of the city in a unique way, displaying over 400 artifacts donated exclusively by Dubliners.
The wide range of artifacts covers everything from James Joyce to U2! The history of Dublin is displayed in a beautiful way, showcasing more dismaying parts of history, as well as more comical and lively ones. You will learn about the sad history of tenement housing in the early 1900s, then later discover the tale of Kennedy’s visit to Ireland in 1963!
Much of what you see will not only teach you something new, but also remind you of your past. In the portion of the exhibition that focuses on more recent years, you will fondly recall events you lived through and be excited by artifacts that speak to your memory of Dublin’s history. Do you remember McGonagles? The museum houses the original McGonagles sign, representing one of the earliest shows U2 ever played.
Speaking of U2, on the museums ground floor you will find the U2 photo exhibition. This is a one of a kind visual feast, displaying photos of the band from 1978-1981, photographed by Patrick Brocklebank. The exhibition premiered at The Little Museum of Dublin, but will begin traveling in September. Definitely see it while you can!
If the collection hasn’t already won you over, the building that the museum is housed in certainly will. It’s gorgeous! The collection is beautifully displayed in an old Georgian house, exhibiting warmth and charm. A portion of the first floor is quite like a living room, with a fireplace and comfortable couches making you feel at home! The location itself is also ideal, being only a 60 second walk from the popular shopping destination, Grafton Street, and right across the street from St. Stephen’s Green!
It is also a good spot to stop if you are looking for more unique Dublin gifts. The museum shop has everything from books and historical films, to jewelry and U2 posters!
The museum tours are the highlight of any visit. Knowledgeable and charming tour guides take you through the years, explaining certain portions of the collection in greater detail and sharing unique anecdotes. They are always ready and willing to answer any questions you have!
The Little Museum of Dublin is a must see for anyone visiting Ireland and for any Dubliner!
